Chester’s independent coffee shops: our picks

We’re sorry that we can’t mention every single cafe in this post but there really is an abundance to choose from! However, these are the first bunch that came to mind and the ones that are really special in their own unique way. P.s, it’s in no particular order.

Marmalade

Located just inside the city walls on Northgate St, Marmalade is a small and intimate cafe with plenty to offer. If you’re looking for a chilled-out lunch spot as you’re walking into Chester, this is the place to hit up. They also have a gorgeous breakfast, brunch and lunch menu jam-packed with tasty sandwiches, salads and homemade cakes – they are particularly great for those who have a gluten-free diet.

Mad Hatter’s Tearoom & Bakery

Mad Hatter’s is nestled away on the Bridge Street Rows and is easy to miss if you’re not looking for it. However, it’s definitely worth seeking it out. Mad Hatter’s has featured on various TV programmes and for good reason too – the eccentric details and Wonderland theme is really something to get excited about. They offer a particularly delicious breakfast menu including eggy bread and smoked kippers. You should definitely try out Alice’s Afternoon Tea if that’s your thing!

Jaunty Goat

It’d be crazy to curate a list of coffee shops and not mention the award-winning Jaunty Gaunt. Recently hailed as Chester’s best indie coffee shop, Jaunty Goat is the perfect spot for a delicious barista coffee in a quirky setting. You’ll find it on Bridge St and if it’s not already, it’ll soon become a firm favourite. If you’re a coffee fan, you can also buy Jaunty Goat’s coffee as wholesale for your business or to make at home! Their website is coming soon… keep an eye out.

Ginger

It’s officially a wine bar and delicatessen but Ginger is the perfect place to sip a freshly brewed coffee and watch the world go by. Conveniently located on Northgate St opposite the Town Hall, Ginger is the ultimate stop for a break from the mad rush of city shopping. You’d be mad to not try out a build-your-own deli board whilst you’re there.

The Flower Cup

One of the most promising and upcoming businesses of Chester’s independent scene, we absolutely adore The Flower Cup on the Bridge Street Row. Their recently launched all-day brunch menu is to die for – with plenty of vegan and vegetarian options too. The best part? It’s not just a coffee shop, it’s also a flower shop (hence the name)! So, whilst you’re sipping your coconut milk latte and tucking into your avocado on toast, you can browse the gorgeous plants and flowers for sale, too.

Cinderbox Coffee

Located within the cafe district of Chester on Bridge St, Cinderbox Coffee is a gorgeous independent with a friendly team of staff and intimate setting. The selection of cakes is probably the most popular reason to visit Cinderbox but their coffee and milkshakes are also to die for. If you’re looking for a simple afternoon break away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this is the perfect place to pop into.
