Healthy Living in Chester: Places to Eat and Workout

January 15, 2018

Ftiness centres and niche eateries galore – Chester is a haven for those looking to boost their health and fitness this year. Get clued up on all the best places to check out in the walled city for healthy living.

It’s pretty cliche but it’s a fact: January is the month when everyone begins their fresh, new healthy living regime. Whether you’re a total gym bunny or a newbie to the plant-based diet, there are plenty of ways to improve your overall wellbeing. 2018 is a sign of the chance to start fresh and grasp a new lust for life. Here are our recommendations for all the best spots in Chester if you’re looking for somewhere to live out your health and fitness fantasy!

Gyming it

In Chester we’re lucky, there are loads of gyms and fitness centres to pick from. The main three are PureGym, Total Fitness and Brio Leisure at Northgate Arena. If swimming and aqua aerobics are your chosen activities, avoid PureGym as it doesn’t have a pool. All three gyms have regular classes involving pilates, yoga, Zumba and body conditioning, however. They also all feature dedicated cycle spaces if you’re brave enough to endure a spin class! The Mill Hotel & Spa also has its own health club if you’re looking for somewhere a little more luxurious to try out. PureGym is the cheapest gym by far with memberships starting at £17.99 per month for a fixed term contract. There are cheaper deals available for students and the greatest perk is that it’s open 24/7. There are also changing spaces and a free weights section but the lack of a pool is definitely noticeable. Total Fitness is more expensive with standard memberships at £50.00 per month. However, it does come with many more perks including three pools, studio spaces, a Ladies Only gym and an onsite cafe and salon.

Something different

If splashing out on a gym membership isn’t something you want to do, there are plenty more ways to get involved in fitness in the local area. Grovesnor Park is a picturesque green space perfect for morning jogs or brisk evening walks. You could always set yourself the goal of completing a walk around the Walls every day or so – the total distance comes to around two miles. Perhaps set a target of doing 5 laps every weekend to rack up a whopping 10 miles on your Fitbit! If you fancy something a bit more fun for a one-off, take a visit to FlipOut or Footgolf. These activities are a guaranteed laugh with friends and family – and they’re great for your healthy living regime.

Getting a bite to eat

We know the deal, you’re out in town shopping at the weekend or you’ve nipped to the post office on your lunch break and you suddenly get the stomach rumbles. It’s all too easy to settle for convenience food when you’re caught hungry in the middle of the city centre. McDonald’s… Burger King… a quick stop at the chippy… We know it’s tempting. However, there are also plenty of amazing eateries if you want something a little more nutritious and wholesome! The V-Bites cafe in Holland & Barrett serves 100% vegan food and plenty of veg-based smoothies that taste like a dream! If you’re opting for a plant-based diet this month or even considering it as a lifestyle change, you’ve simply got to visit V-Bites. You’ll be amazed at the selection of sandwiches, paninis and wraps on offer. If you find yourself on Watergate Street, we can’t recommend Falafel Xpress enough. This place does falafel wraps and salads like no other – very healthy but very satisfying. For a Mediterranean lunch break then you could wander over to Frodsham Street – Meze serves up delightful Turkish cuisine full to the brim with nutrients and flavour.
