Hoole is one of the most famous locations in the city and beyond. Thanks to a bustling independent high street, local amenities and award-winning restaurants and pubs.

History of Hoole

Located on the edge of the city centre, Hoole benefits from a village style community with a fiercely independent spirit that has seen it crowned as “NottingHoole” by in and out of town visitors.

Belonging to the Parish of St Werburgh the name comes from the Old English word hol and is believed to mean “at the hollow” (or hole) possibly referring to the “hollow way” formed by a Roman roadway.

Dating back to the 12th Century, Hoole lies on the Roman road which leaves Chester via Frodsham Street and Brook Street, continuing through Flookersbrook into Newton Hollows, which still exists as a sunken pathway and connected with Mannings Lane before the construction of the now disused railway.

Over the years, the area has expanded from what is considered the centre around Faulkner Street to include locations up towards Ermin Road and as close to Newton and Guilden Sutton.

Since the early 2000s, Hoole has been widely recognised as one of the most eclectic and diverse places to live in Chester winning some prestigious awards along the way. Let’s look at what makes buying a home in Hoole so popular.
